Time Chart vs Range Chart — which one should you use for day trading?

In this video, I explain the key differences between a 1-minute time chart and a 10-range chart using the DayTradeToWin trading software on the E-mini S&P and Micro E-mini markets.

A time chart creates a new candle based on time. On a 1-minute chart, a new candle begins every 60 seconds regardless of how far price moves.

A range chart works differently. Each candle represents a fixed amount of price movement. In this example, I use a 10-range chart, which represents 10 ticks or 2.5 points on the E-mini S&P and Micro E-mini S&P.

You’ll learn:

• How time charts and range charts build candles differently
• Why time does not determine when a new range candle forms
• Why range charts can make market movement easier to see
• What happens when volatility increases
• Why range charts can become difficult when candles move too quickly
• How slow markets appear differently on time charts versus range charts
• How support and resistance can look different on each chart
• How I use the Trade Scalper and Sonic System on both chart types
• How you can use time and range charts together

There isn’t necessarily one chart type that is always better. The important question is whether the market is moving at a speed and distance that gives you enough time to understand the setup and make a trading decision.
